Mexico Tortilla Chips Packing Machine Case | Nacho Chips & Corn Chips Packaging Solution
Project Background
This is a tortilla chips and nacho chips packing machine project for a customer from Mexico. The customer needed a stable vertical packaging solution for packing triangle corn chips, mainly in 280g and 450g pillow bags.
Tortilla chips, nacho chips, and corn chips are very popular snack products in Mexico and Latin American markets. However, these products are not easy to pack because they are light, bulky, fragile, irregular in shape, and easy to break during feeding and filling.
Based on the customer’s real production requirements, Samfull provided 4 sets of vertical form fill seal packing machines, each equipped with a 10-head combination weigher with 5L buckets, suitable for medium and large-volume snack chips packaging.

Why Tortilla Chips and Nacho Chips Need a Special Packaging Solution
Packing tortilla chips is different from packing small snacks, granules, or powder. The machine design must consider product volume, breakage rate, weighing accuracy, bag size, and sealing quality.
1. Fragile Triangle Chip Structure
Tortilla chips and nacho chips are usually thin and crispy. If the feeding height is too high or the discharge process is too aggressive, the chips may break before entering the bag.
For this project, the packaging system was designed with a suitable multihead weigher and vertical packing machine structure to help reduce unnecessary product impact during weighing and filling.
2. Large Volume but Light Weight
Although the packing weights are only 280g and 450g, tortilla chips occupy much more space than dense products such as rice, sugar, powder, or nuts.
That means the bag size must be large enough to allow smooth filling and proper sealing. If the bag is too small, it may cause poor bag shape, product blocking, weak sealing, or broken chips.
3. Irregular Product Shape
Triangle corn chips are not uniform in shape. Their irregular structure makes feeding and weighing more difficult than round or small granular snacks.
A 10-head multihead weigher with 5L buckets is more suitable for this type of snack product because it can handle larger product volume and improve weighing stability.
4. Retail Snack Bag Appearance
For tortilla chips and nacho chips sold in supermarkets, convenience stores, restaurants, and snack distribution channels, the final bag must have a clean appearance, strong sealing, and stable size.
The vertical packing machine can form pillow bags from roll film, complete weighing, filling, sealing, cutting, and finished bag output automatically.
Machine Configuration for This Tortilla Chips Packing Project
1. Vertical Form Fill Seal Packing Machine
The main machine is used to form pillow bags from composite roll film. It automatically completes:
Film pulling
Bag forming
Product filling
Back sealing
Horizontal sealing
Cutting
Finished bag discharge
This structure is widely used for tortilla chips packaging, nacho chips packaging, corn chips packaging, potato chips packaging, puffed snack packaging, and other crispy snack packaging.
2. 10-Head Multihead Weigher with 5L Buckets
For snack chips, weighing accuracy and product flow are very important.
The customer selected a 10-head combination weigher with 5L buckets, which is more suitable for bulky products such as tortilla chips and nacho chips.
Compared with small bucket weighers, 5L buckets provide better product accommodation for large-volume chips and help improve feeding smoothness.
3. Composite Film Packaging
The machine is designed for composite film, commonly used in snack food packaging because it provides:
Good sealing performance
Better moisture resistance
Printable retail packaging appearance
Suitable barrier protection for crispy snacks
4. Reserved Gas Flushing Pipe
The system includes a reserved gas pipe. If the customer wants to extend shelf life or improve product crispness protection in the future, nitrogen flushing can be added or connected.
For fried corn chips, tortilla chips, and nacho chips, nitrogen flushing is often used to reduce oxidation and protect bag shape during transportation.
Bag Former Reference
According to the production order, the project included bag former references for 280g and 450g packaging.
| Packing Weight | Bag Width Reference | Film Width Reference |
|---|---|---|
| 280g | Around 210mm | Around 440mm |
| 450g | Around 250mm | Around 520mm |
The final bag size should be confirmed according to the customer’s real product bulk density, chip size, nitrogen filling requirement, roll film material, and target retail bag appearance.
Application Range
This packaging solution can be used not only for tortilla chips but also for many similar snack products:
Tortilla chips
Nacho chips
Corn chips
Triangle corn chips
Mexican-style corn chips
BBQ corn chips
Cheese nacho chips
Spicy tortilla chips
Potato chips
Cassava chips
Plantain chips
Puffed snacks
Fried snacks
Crispy snack chips
Technical Experience from This Project
For this Mexico tortilla chips packing project, the key point was not only machine speed, but also the overall balance between product protection and stable packaging.
In real snack food packaging applications, customers often focus only on speed. But for tortilla chips and nacho chips, too high a speed without proper feeding and bag size design may lead to more broken chips, unstable filling, and poor bag sealing.
Based on our experience, a good tortilla chips packaging machine should consider:
Product bulk density
Chip size and thickness
Broken rate tolerance
Target packing weight
Bag width and bag length
Roll film width
Sealing temperature stability
Nitrogen flushing requirement
Factory voltage and local operation language
Future maintenance convenience
For this reason, the customer finally selected a practical configuration: vertical packing machine + 10-head multihead weigher + 5L buckets + Spanish/English interface + reserved gas pipe.
Why the Customer Chose Samfull
The Mexico customer chose Samfull because we could provide a machine configuration based on real product characteristics instead of offering a general snack packing machine only.

FAQ
1. What machine is suitable for tortilla chips packaging?
A vertical form fill seal packing machine with a multihead weigher is commonly used for tortilla chips packaging. For bulky and fragile tortilla chips, a larger bucket multihead weigher, such as 5L buckets, is recommended.
2. Can this machine pack nacho chips?
Yes. This machine can pack nacho chips, tortilla chips, corn chips, triangle chips, and similar crispy snack products.
3. Why use a 10-head multihead weigher for corn chips?
A 10-head multihead weigher can provide better weighing accuracy and higher efficiency for irregular snack products. For large-volume corn chips, bigger buckets help improve product flow and reduce blocking.
4. Can the machine use nitrogen flushing?
Yes. This project reserved a gas pipe for future nitrogen flushing. Nitrogen flushing can help protect crispy snacks, reduce oxidation, and improve shelf life.
5. What bag type is suitable for tortilla chips?
Back seal pillow bags are widely used for tortilla chips, nacho chips, and corn chips. The bag size should be designed according to packing weight, chip volume, and final retail display requirement.
6. Can one machine pack both 280g and 450g bags?
Yes. The machine can pack different weights by changing parameters and using the suitable bag former and film width. For this project, the customer used 280g and 450g packaging sizes.
Conclusion
This Mexico customer case shows a practical packaging solution for tortilla chips, nacho chips, and corn chips.
By using a vertical form fill seal packing machine with a 10-head multihead weigher and 5L buckets, the system can meet the packaging needs of bulky, fragile, and irregular snack products.
For snack food manufacturers producing tortilla chips, nacho chips, corn chips, potato chips, or other crispy snacks, Samfull can provide customized packaging solutions based on product size, target weight, bag type, film width, factory voltage, and production capacity.
